I want to live in a world populated by talking computers and flying cars! To make that science fictional goal come true, I was an artificial intelligence researcher for 10 years (my primary project in grad school was building a computer program that got reminded of stories to tell), and of course, the reason I took up hovercrafting should be obvious. I'm fascinated by astronomy and space exploration for similarly science fictional reasons.

I'm also interested in politics and foreign policy. I suppose my political beliefs were originally influenced by utopian science fiction while my foreign policy interests stem from the redrawn borders of outlandish future histories, but, much as I'd love to espouse some futuristic political solution, I've come to terms with the fact that science fiction has more to say about science and technology than politics and economics, and these days, my personal political beliefs are disappointingly ordinary and sincerely centrist.
